Skipping breakFast - The Power of fasting

Breakfast is the worst meal of the day.

I hope I got your attention. I just said  "Breakfast is the worst meal of the day". This probably goes against everything you ever heard. I remember my mother always making sure I had a good breakfast so I would do good in school. Somehow that early 6.00 a.m. breakfast in the pit of my stomach was going to fuel my brain so much I would answer every question correct on my test. The truth is, breakfast is slowing you down. Breakfast is interrupting your body's natural cleansing process and breakfast is aging you faster. 

 

Look at that sun rise. It's a new day and you are rising with the sun. There is actually a living sun within our temple (body), and as the sun rises on earth so does the sun rise within you. The beginning of the day is a time to cleanse, purify and detox any chemicals and excess waste from your system. This is known as our body's biological rhythm, that dictates the periods of tissue repair, tissue growth, waste elimination, and so forth. Our bodies go through cycles every 24 hours, each and every day.

The first cycle of the day is elimination. From 4am-12pm. This is a time when your body would like to direct most of its energy to the work of cleansing toxins. The best practice is to eat nothing at all and drink warm lemon water to start the day. This way you are not interrupting your bodies cleansing process and the warm water with lemon will alkalize your system, preparing your digestion tract. If you ignore this natural process and eat a heavy breakfast of oatmeal, potatoes, waffles, french toast etc, it will take all the energy away from healing and direct it straight to digestion, and you will never achieve full elimination. I suggest getting in the habit of fasting until noon, when the sun is at it's highest. This takes practice and getting used to, but when fully achieved you will reap so many benefits.

Did you know that if you reduce your caloric intake by 25% you are likely to add more healthy years to your life? This is also another reason that skipping breakfast is great. The idea here is to go beyond the need to eat, you decrease your calories and give your body the opportunity to heal itself. Don't just take my word for it, both Prophet Muhammad and Yeshua were also proponents of fasting. Even in the east (particularly in India), people fast every so often to take time for their body to cleanse, to help the mind relax (not think about meals and eating) and to take a break from cooking and eating; so that one can take that time to reflect on what is more important - the Supreme, The Most High, The Lord. 

Not only does fasting cleanse and purify your body, it also makes you less attached and addicted to food and constantly thinking about food. People love to say "I'm hungry", but true hunger is far from what the average American experiences daily. Whenever I fast , I notice I have storage of so much more energy within myself. I have the very breath of life fueling me and I don't always need to be worrying about what I will eat next. You can try this for yourself. Even just a few times, will help you realize the truth in these words. 

When you break fast at noon, what you eat should compliment your goals of fasting and achieving a healthy lifestyle. Fruits, nuts, beans, rice, grains, seeds, vegetables will always be the staple for good health. A plant based diet will continue that cleansing and detoxification process which will compliment your daily overnight fast until noon. I wanted to express that fasting until noon is not an excuse to over indulge in processed foods or anything which would be unhealthy for our body. Drinking just water and/or juices before noon will reward you greatly, with a light stomach and an agile mind. I personally enjoy just drinking water during my fast but a little fruit or fresh juice won't hurt you. It is always the heavy foods which you want to avoid. Remember you must ease into anything you do. Make skipping breakfast an enjoyable process. If you can skip breakfast 4 out of 7 days a week you are on the right track. If you really get hungry during the a.m. hours try some light fruit instead of heavy cooked foods. Remember health is all about balance, find the right balance for you and enjoy this healthy journey as you grow with nature.

When you don't eat for awhile several things happen to your body. Here's some of the changes that occur in your body when you fast. (click the links for evidence!) 

  • Insulin levels: Blood levels of insulin drop significantly, which facilitates fat burning (1).
  • Human growth hormone: The blood levels of growth hormone may increase as much as 5-fold (23). Higher levels of this hormone facilitate fat burning and muscle gain, and have numerous other benefits (45).
  • Cellular repair: The body induces important cellular repair processes, such as removing waste material from cells (6).
  • Gene expression: There are beneficial changes in several genes and molecules related to longevity and protection against disease (78).

In a nut shell, fasting occasionally and responsibly, is the best thing you can do for yourself.

Benjamin Franklin once said "The best of all medicines is resting and fasting." I encourage everyone to stop eating breakfast or if you must, keep it real light with a few pieces of fruit, preferably a mono-meal, or some juice. Stop thinking so much about your next meal and free your mind to create more, work on your projects and spend less time eating. Eventually, you are going to have so much energy when you skip breakfast everyday and you will be excited about your meal at noon. You will find yourself with extreme focus and mental clarity as you come in balance with your own body's natural biological rhythms. Your thoughts will be pure and you'll have the light hearted energy to accomplish all your goals through the day. Food is heavy and can weigh you down if you abuse it. I hope I shared enough good information with you to encourage you to do away with heavy breakfast foods and enjoy the lightness of life as you rise with the sun on an empty stomach.
