Coconut Water is Life

Coconut Water is Life

By Lea Kilenga Bey

Every time I break open a coconut to make a meal from the delicious and nutrient dense coconut "meat",  I make sure I save the water inside the coconut. I hope you do too! Its delicious, SO nutritious and extremely hydrating for the body. You can either drink it straight, or you can cook with it! Add it to smoothies, raw desserts and so much more!

Let me cut right to the chase and share with you, my 4 reasons why I consider coconut water one of Nature and Life's greatest drinks!

Electrolytes: Coconut water is FULL of electrolytes, which are the minerals that carry electric charges -- either positive or negative -- in solution, acquiring the capacity to conduct electricity. If one’s body is deficient on any of the key electrolytes the body is unable to perform its optimal functions. Everything works in your body because of your nerves abilities to send and receive electric signals from its neurons which are made possible by electrolytes. Your heartbeat, muscle movement, digestion etc are all made possible by these minerals. Coconut water is the easiest and best ways to get the electrolytes like calcium magnesium phosphorus, potassium, and sodium. For a person living with Sickle Cell like myself,  coconut water is the purest richest source of electrolytes for the body and it helps me tremendously.

Natural Isotonic: Another incredible benefit of the coconut water is that it's a natural isotonic. Which means it contains the same concentration of minerals and salts found in blood plasma and has been used intravenously for over 60 years. And being a person who has received water and blood intravenously countless times in my life, this is a better prevention option for the former.

Dehydration: Dehydration is a big problem in our society and we’re taught to drink harmful carbonated soft drinks or energy drinks with added chemicals to regain back our energy. It's incredibly harmful and the effects of both dehydration and drinking highly processed drinks are clear. What we’re not taught is, that a natural source of hydration from nature like coconut water is KEY. Not only is it good for dehydration, it is also great for post-workout rehydration.         Coconut water also has anti-inflammatory properties that help with muscle soreness that may be caused by build up of lactic acid.

PH Balance: Speaking of acid, this baby is high on the pH scale. Coconut water will help you keep up your body's pH balance, reducing the build up of mucus and therefore can prevent many ailments. The foods we eat these days (especially if they are cooked and/or animal based) have significantly less potassium, magnesium, and chloride. They also have more sodium, compared to raw unadulterated natural foods. This results in "metabolic acidosis”. In other words, the pH levels of many people’s bodies are low and no longer optimal, which causes a host of diseases (including cancer). On top of this, many people suffer from low nutrient intake and problems such as potassium and magnesium deficiency, which they don't even know about. This accelerates the aging process, causes a gradual loss of organ functions, and degenerates tissue and bone mass. High degrees of acidity force our bodies to rob minerals from the bones, cells, organs and tissues. Coconut water gives the body all these essential nutrients.

So break open a coconut and savor the delicious, refreshing sweetness of this amazing gift from Mother Nature. Yes beloveds, Coconut Water is life. You can definitely research further on the many additional benefits I have failed to mention. All in All, you can never go wrong with these life-bearing young green coconuts.
